A new generation of sniper rifle is in development

Posted by New Scientist Staff on Wednesday, February 08, 2021 12:00:03A new sniper rifle, dubbed the “Havok”, is being developed by a new group of Chinese companies.

The company, Snipers Hide, has partnered with Chinese aerospace company Nanjing Aero Technology to develop the weapon.

The new weapon uses the same basic design of the HK416 sniper rifle.

But the HK417, which was first used by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in the 1970s, was designed to penetrate heavy armour, such as the heavy armour of tanks.

The Snipers hide team, which is led by former military personnel and engineers, said it would be able to produce the weapon in a “substantially faster” timeframe than HK416s.

“We’ve built prototypes of the weapon, and are now looking at production,” the company said.

The HK417 is an extremely light, highly manoeuvrable weapon, capable of hitting up to 4m with a powerful projectile.HK416, which first appeared in 1970, has a range of up to 50km.

The new HK417 weapon has a maximum range of 800km.

The HAVOK, which uses a modified HK417 barrel and receiver, will be able shoot up to 400mm-long projectiles.

The prototype weapon will be ready for testing by January 2022, Snives Hide said.

The company has already developed a number of other weapons.

It’s a long way from the HK415, a heavy weapon that China deployed during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
