In a poll conducted by CNN, more than 90% of respondents identified Birmingham, Alabama as the most ethnically diverse city in the United States.
However, it was New York City, home to the most racially diverse population, which topped the list.
In terms of race, black Americans are far more likely than whites to live in cities with high diversity.
Birmingham, which has a black population of more than 11,000, ranked second.
But in terms of income, the most-diverse cities are those with high median household incomes.
New York, home of the most highly-educated and wealthy population, was number one with median household income of $77,542.
